Patrick McGuire (1775-1850) emigrated from Inniskillen, Ireland to Philadelphia to Columbia. He was one of the first settlers in what became the Columbia community and married Martha Kavanaugh in 1813. Bel-Air originally faced Santa Fee PK/ Hwy 7 on a hill atop High St. surrounded by 4,550 acres (I assume that W. 1st St/ High St. continued on toward James Campbell BL). Their estate was just north of downtown Columbia. Their first home was on the Columbia town square in 1823.

He purchased many lots and had a large estate encompassing much of western Columbia as well as having varied investments and in banking. In 1819, he co-founded Columbia Bank. In 1870, he opened a short-lived steamboat company. And her operated a dry goods store for many years. He was a trusteee of Woodward Academy and a board member of Columbia Female Academy. Later, he built other homes as wedding gifts - Mayes-Frierson and Mayes House. Another daughter lived at the Porter House.

The large McQuire land holdings were given to their daughter Maria Williams, and she moved to New Orleans with her husband John Williams. Their son John W. Frierson was the last male hair. The land was sold to Dr. William J. Polk, a cousin of President Polk.

The main home has been repurposed and is now part of the Bel-Air Nursing Home (now Hope Clinic). The nursing home owners changed the front to face the James Campbell BL bypass.

In 1983, the owner was Edwin Martin of Cleveland, TN of the Hope Clinic. NR 1983
