Originally Abbott Lane (current Abbott-Martin Rd.) Nashville, TN
Circa 1932.
The Armistead family built their bucolic estate down Abbott Rd. and west of the Foster's Fairview tract - at the corner of Abbott Rd. and Hillsboro Rd. They were among the early residents of the emerging Green Hills area and witnessed the shift of the commercial area from the Lipscomb's Avalon farm to the current Green Hills/ Hillsboro Rd. area.
(Joseph) Parkes Armistead (1893-1984) wed Katherine Moore Armistead (1897-1988) in 1917. About fifteen years later, they built Burlington as a 52 acre estate in the woodlands south of Nashville. The property had extensive gardens and landscaping. Katherine's family had owned the building that hosted Franklin's first known business, Spot Cash Grocery in 1892. In 1925, the Armsteads sold the building. Armistead was a assistant cashier at Broadway National Bank, and then in 1924 at First American National Bank as well. By 1948, he was president of First American, and in 1957 became chairman. Eight years later, he retired and became Honorary Chair of First American. Armistead was a director of First American as well as multiple other companies. This twentieth century Burlington estate likely stretched from current Vailwood to nearly Hobbs Rd. to the southern end of Cross Creek Rd.
A couple years after Armistead's death, his family sold the large estate. Beginning about 1986, the subdivision Abbottsford was developed.
