428 N. Cumberland St. Jackson, TN
Circa 1870. 2-story red brick home with upstairs porch
In 1870, William Kirby Walsh (1813-1880) and Telitha Jane Anderson Walsh (1828-1878) built this home next door to their home as a wedding gift for his daughter, Dinetia Walsh Hamilton (1850-1884) and her new husband, Dr. Frank Hamilton (1843-1910). They were prominent members of society, and Dr. Hamilton served as head of the Local Board of Health. He helped save Jackson during the yellow fever epidemic of 1878. Dr. Hamilton's second wife was Cornelia Hudson Hamilton (1856-1957). Their son Frank Bascom Hamilton, Jr. (1880-1929) and Mai Alworth Hamilton (1886-1941) inherited the home. Mai resided there until her death.
Later, the residence was converted into apartments. In the 1990s, Glenda and Ken Baker saved it from being condemned and bought it. They worked to restore it.
In 2005, Roy Neil Graves and Sue Lain Hunt Graves became owners. Graves is a University of Tennessee-Martin professor of humanities and has taught there since 1969.
Two years later, in 2007, Kathi and Rex Leatherwood saw the home and became owners. Rex used the home as his law office. After multiple requests to rent the home or use it for special events, the Leatherwoods decided to follow the market and open the home. Eventually converted to B&B. See Walsh House, Hamilton House
