2611 Beech Bluff Rd.(Rte. 6 ) Jackson, TN
Circa 1823. 2.5 story brick Federal home
Mathias DeBerry (1788-1838) and Elizabeth Epps Deberry (1785-1846) constructed their home on 700 acres. His family came from North Carolina to settle in West Tennessee. The porch was added in 1921. The old house had a wooden walkway from the front porch to the road. The Deberry-Hurt House is considered the oldest home in Madison Co. and one of the oldest abodes in West Tennessee. Madison County was established in 1821. Deberry served as Justice of the Peace three times and was Sheriff from 1831-35.
It was enlarged by his son-in-law Robert Bailey Hurt (1821-1881) and Susan Deberry Hurt (1825-1930) in 1855. They wed in 1843. It was now a 2 story Federal brick home, and they lived there for 40 years. He had been a merchant in Nashville prior to moving west. Hurt was a leader in creating the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in which he was State director.
About 1922, Hurt’s granddaughter Elizabeth Hurt Leeper (1849-1920) owned the property with her husband Gowan Leeper (1842-1876) and family relatives remained there until 1975. The home was modernized in the early twentieth-century with indoor bathrooms and central heat and air.
In 1980, Diane E. Tankersley was the owner with about 8.5 acres, and the address is on Beech Bluff Rd. NR 1980
