Deepwood was built by (Dudley) Cobb Pilcher (1904-1949), a Vanderbilt physician at 5335 Stanford Dr. off Hillsboro Rd. in 1936/8. Cobb was married to (Laura) Barbour Howe Pilcher (1911-1967).

It was erected in International style and was one of the later homes built in the newly developed West Wood subdivision north of Tyne Blvd off Hillsboro Rd. - it was the first neighborhood established (1930) in what became Forest Hills. Stanford & Criswell Co. were the developers. The subdivision shows that by the late 1930s residential development had stretched beyond Green Hills and continued moving south along Hillsboro R.

Dr. Pilcher was a Vanderbilt graduate who founded the University’s Division of Neurologic Surgery. Dr. Pilcher was a brilliant person who entered Vanderbilt University at age 14 and earned his M.D. by the age of 22. His family owned Barrow’s Hill/ Stegar Brick. Barbour was a local artist and very popular with neighborhood children.
