John William Campbell (1799-1874) and Jane Eliza Porter Campbell (1807-1849) built Edgewood. They wed in 1827. Jane was the daughter of Alexander and Susannah Porter of Riverside in Nashville. John’s family had lived in Lexington, KY and Nashville, TN. He studied law in KY. In 1833, John and Jane moved to Jackson. After Jane's death, Campbell remarried to Louisa Anne Gibbs Campbell (1811-1892) in 1852. Louisa was married three times: Dixon Allen (m1832); J. W. Campbell; and Judge William Little Brown (1789-1830) in Nashville.

Because he had run a bank in Lexington, KY, the organizers of Union Bank in Jackson convinced him to move there and start their bank. Campbell owned a sawmill and was Andrew Jackson’s first banker and insurance agent. In 1833, he opened one of Jackson’s first banks, Union Bank, as cashier. He purchased 1,300 acres from J. Hogg and built Edgewood. It was located where McMillan Towers is on South Fairgrounds St. The home faced north towards Airways BL.

The next generation there was their son Alexander William Campbell (1828-1893) and Anne Dixon Allen Campbell (1833-1916). He was an attorney in Jackson and involved with Democratic politics.

In the 1950s, Edgewood was razed, and by 1971, the McMillan Towers were built on the site. In 1982, Edgewood Towers was on the site. The family and house are remembered by Campbell St., Edgewood Towers, and Edgewood Ave.  See Riverside
