As he neared retirement, Meharry Medical College and its donors built this home in 1921 for Meharry Medical College’s first president, George Whipple Hubbard (1841-1924 ) and his wife Sarah Anne "Annie" Lyons Hubbard (1825-1941). They wed in 1870. It remains located at 1109 First Ave. South.

Having taught in various capacities during his life, in 1876, Hubbard opened the Meharry Medical Department of Central Tennessee College with guidance from Dr. John W. Braden and Dr. W. J. Sneed. Hubbard earned his medical degree in 1879 from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

After 1889, Central Tennessee College closed, and Meharry Medical College became independent. Dr. Hubbard served as president for forty-five years. Then in 1900, the name changed to Meharry Medical College of Walden University. In 1915, Meharry received a separate charter by the State of Tennessee. Within three years, both the Hubbards died. In the late 1920s, Meharry outgrew the South Nashville campus. It purchased and built a new campus in northwest Nashville which opened in 1930.

Forty years later, in 1970, the Hubbard House was remodeled for use as a parsonage for the Seay-Hubbard United Methodist Church. As of 2016, the home was unoccupied. The house is the only remaining building from Meharry’s original campus in South Nashville. NRHP 1973

In Winter 2023, it was publicized that needed renovations for the Hubbard House had been completed - including front door and upper outdoor patios reattachment.
