J.W. Houston House

Jay Brothers

269 (was 259) South Center St. Collierville, TN

Circa 1884. 1.5 story frame home

J. W. Houston (?-1888) built this home on eight acres and owned several plantations nearby. The home had about 4 acres around it. Houston was a major property owner. He served as an alderman for the Town of Collierville between 1870-1888. Originally, it was on the edge of Collierville.

After Houston’s death, the probate court put the property in the hands of M.V. Hamner, possibly because of debts owed.

Then, Hamner sold it to J. T. Cox (1858-1943) in 1889. Then (for reasons unclear) the property became owned by John Carson (J. C.) Fleming (?-1933) about 1909. Fleming’s family was prominent in Mississippi and lived in Barton, MS off Byhalia Rd. Fleming moved to Collierville and about 1915 went into the undertaking business. He later sold that firm in 1925. Fleming built another home on the property. After Fleming’s death, his daughter Mary inherited the home and resided there until her death in 1976.

Next, the home and 4 remaining acres were inherited by Mary's nephew, Willie Erving.

From 1999-2016, Charles Eugene Hodum owned the home and property. The home served as his law office. In 2016, the structure was foreclosed. A some point, the bank owner requested to demolish the structure, but was denied. The Collierville Historic District Commission has temporarily postponed foreclosure in hopes that a buyer will emerge. In 2016, the home was placed on the 10 most endangered list of the Tennessee Preservation Trust.

In 2021, a new owner purchased the property from the bank. At one point, two businesses, Cafe Eclipse and Midnight Star Spa may have operated there. It is unclear in early 2025 if they are operating. NR 1991
