Circa 1859
Capt. James Lee, Sr. (1808-1889) and Pemina Lucinda Gibson Lee (1810-?) built the home. They wed in 1830. He was the founder of a river steamboat company and iron works. When the Lee family moved to Memphis, they became one of the most prominent families.
In 1866, Lee Sr established the Lee Line which was important to Memphis growth. The company provided reliable transportation that helped grow the cotton trade and Memphis reputation as a wholesale trade center. Lee Sr home was called the First James Lee House on Adams Ave.
They had two sons: Jame Lee Jr. (1832) and Capt. Samuel Stacker Lee (1844-1890). Lee Jr. bought a nearby house. Samuel married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Yeager Lee and likely continued to reside in the home.
