John Overton III (1842-1903) and Matilda Susan Watkins Overton (1847-1913)
His family was the founding Overton family of Nashville and Memphis with ties to the family of Harding, Bosley, Dickinson, Jackson, White and Lea. Judge John and Mary M. Overton of Traveler’s Rest. Judge Overton helped found Memphis. His brother, Watkins Overton, Jr. was a long-serving mayor of Memphis. His home was built near his brother. John was a businessman, politician, and one of the wealthiest men in Tennessee.
The Overton home was demolished about 1918. The site became Methodist Hospital in 1918 (now Methodist University Hospital). See Watkins Overton Home, Traveler's Rest, River Grange
