From Johnson Archives
The widowed Ellen Margaret “Nellie” Powers Pidgeon (1870-1964) constructed the home. Her husband James Christopher Pidgeon (1864-1941) had lived with her in their original home on the same site. Pidgeon purchased the wholesale liquor business, L. C. Lea Co., wholesale and retail, the a location on South Main St. in 1901. A decade later, he sold his liquor interests, and bought the Coca-Cola Bottling Comp. of Memphis in 1909. Nellie remained at the home a couple decades after her husband passed away.
Family also owned Magnolia Farms (now Pidgeon Estates) which owned, bred and exhibited world class American Saddlebreds.
In 2004, fire gutted home, and it was completely rebuilt. The area is known as East Memphis. Ed Good with Goodway developed the neighborhood, and the home got a new address on Nellwood. Residential neighborhoods developed: in 1965, Nellwood and 1970, Ed Good and 1981, Shadowlawn. The family is remembered with Pidgeon Rd., Nellwood.
