Polk House: Home to a POEMS Leader

583 East Main St. Jackson, TN

Circa 1895. 3-story Queen Anne style home.

Thomas Marlborough Polk (1852-1928) and Willie Rogers Polk (1855-1907) wed in 1875. After Willie's death, Thomas remarried to Laura Lee Sharp Polk (1868-1926) in 1909.

The Polks had a third floor ballroom that was well used during the social season. Thomas Polk was president of Second National Bank from 1907-1928 and mayor of Jackson in 1909.

Later Mrs. Stanfill owned it and boarded Union Univ. students.

In 1983, it was in poor shape when Lloyd Weldon Privitt (1933-2021) purchased and restored it. He was married to Patsy Jan Jones Privett (1941-2003). He was a prominent citizen in keeping Jackson history alive and in restoring old homes. Privett was an active founder (1982) and leader in the Preservation of East Main Street (POEMS) organization. He won multiple Civic Pride awards for efforts in renovation on East Main, the downtown area and the Depot as well as serving as chairman of the Jackson-Madison County Historic Zoning Commission for 14 years. He founded General Brick Company in 1977. Patsy assisted Lloyd at General Brick and two years later, in 1979, owned and operated Merle Norman Cosmetics. She was a partner with her husband in renovating historic homes.

The home last sold in 2009. NR East Main St. Historical District 1980
