Scales House (Nashville): I-440 Parkway Neighbor

Sharon Hill Circle Nashville, TN

Circa 1800. Small brick house

Off Sharondale Lane on the First Church of Chris, Science and Reading Room campus (2911 Hillsboro Rd.).

In 1798, Elisha Davis gave 124 acres to his nephew (& namesake) Elisha Davis (?-1803) and his wife Polly Herrin Davis (?-1807). They built a small brick house on the property and raised cows, horses, pigs and planted corn. Their daughter Nancy Herrin Davis Edney married Edward Edney in 1819.

Six years later, in 1825, the Edneys sold the property to Henry Scales (?-1845) and Ann Scales. They enlarged the house, continued to grow corn and oats and had 94 acres. Between 1830-40, all the Graves family members left the area or died except Henry and one son.

After Henry died, about 1849, the farm was sold to A. B. Montgomery and ??? They were a wealthy neighbors to the northeast toward town. Montgomery abandoned his plantation as the Civil War began, burned his home, and left for Texas.

In the late 1800s, Lynwood Nursery operated on the land.

From 1897-1926, Lemuel Campbell (1890-1927) and Johnnie Marshall Campbell owned the property. They moved when a railroad seized a portion of their land, and he was unable to prevent it. They moved to Dun Ailie.

Later, landscape designed L. A. Wuest owned the place until about 1960.

A couple years later, in 1962, the First Church of the Christian Science purchased the land and the home and kept the house which it maintains. It built out its own church campus fronting Hillsboro Pk. See Dun Ailie
