Stoddert Caruthers (1845-1904) and Ella Caroline Brown Caruthers (1853-1931) built their home to the south of Jackson. They wed in 1888. His maternal grandfather was Thomas McCorry of the McCorry Home. His sister Sallie P. Caruthers Hays wed Capt Middleton Hays and lived at Bellwood. Ella’s parents were Judge Milton and Sarah Francis Brown. Judge Brown was Judge of the Chancery Court of West Tennessee in 1835, and later,he was a founder of both Southwestern University (Memphis) and Lambuth College (Jackson). Caruthers was one of Jackson’s leading bankers and attorneys. He was extensively involved in real estate transactions in West Tennessee and Mississippi. He was a partner with E. S. Mallory in law. He is remembered with Stoddert St. in Jackson. After Caruthers’ death, Ella remained in the home until her death.


In 2024, the former site is now on the very southern edge of the Jackson commercial area with Carl Perkins Civic Center, L. Thomas State Office Building and various law enforcement and emergency services buildings. See Bellwood, McCorry Home
