The West J. Crawford House/ Carimi House

Circa 1877. A 2-story Italianate style home 


The Crawford House is at the intersection of South Lauderdale St. and East Pontotoc Ave. At the time, the neighborhood was the Vance-Pontotoc district and almost as nice as the Victorian Village on Adams.

West James Crawford (1844-1923) and Annie Louise Thompson (1850-1916) were the first owners. They wed in 1874. He was from Vicksburg, MS. He was in the cotton industry, president of the Cotton Exchange from 1885-86, and president of the Merchants Cotton Press and Storage Co. He helped found The Commercial Appeal and from 1894-1923 was the primary owner/ president of the publishing company. He was a director of the Manhattan Savings Bank and Phoenix Fire Insurance Co. In 1913, the Crawford family moved east to new residential neighborhoods near 1 E. Parkway North. 


For over a decade, from 1913-1924, the home was vacant. 


In 1924, Santina “Sarah” Virga Carimi (1889-1977) and Gioachino "Jake" Carimi (1892-1942) bought the home. Their three children stayed there: Frank Joseph Carimi, Jr. (1920-1980), Lucille “Lucia” Carimi (?-1993) and Jennie J. Carimi (1922-2010). The Carimi family enjoyed success until 1980 when Frank Jr. was killed in a robbery. His spinster sisters inherited the home and remained until their deaths. In 2010, the last surviving sister Jennie died.


In 2023, Jarayda Jenell Payne owned the home. NR. 1980/ delisted 1987 b/c fire damage/ 2024
