William Alonzo Gage (1838-1920) was a prominent cotton merchant and in 1878 was president of W. A. Gage & Co. cotton factors. He was also president of Bluff City Fire Insurance Co.; a director of Factor’s Fire Insurance Co.; a director of First National Bank since 1864. He served as president of the Cotton Exchange 1910-11. He was married twice: Clara Morgan Gage (1847-1924)(m. 1864) and Mary Walton Gage (1858-1941)(m. 1879).

At some point, the Gage family moved further east to 259 Kennilworth on the side of the current Overton Park. It is unknown when the home was demolished. The family is remembered with East and West Gage Avenues.
